Starting today citizens can see the composition of more than 500 foods, among the most consumed by the English, thanks to a new application to access the database English Food Composition (BEDC) and has been presented today by the Minister for Health and Social Policy, Trinidad Jiménez.
The new database contains unified way and in accordance with international scientific standards the food composition tables , which are a useful tool for assessment state nutritional status of a population throughout life, both in situations of health and disease. This application will help improve the education of citizens and specialists work related to nutrition.
The database, which aims to reach a thousand different foods next year, is built to European standards developed by the R ed European Excellence EuroFIR and will join other European databases in the Association AISBL EuroFIR, which is responsible for developing a unified and quality standards of the bases of food composition data in Europe and their interconnection via web services.
At this time, citizens can access part of that network. In particular, it allows to know, for example, what nutrients it contains a particular food.
BEDC network was set up with aid for complementary actions of the Ministry of Science and Innovation ( MICINN ) and the funding and coordination of the English Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition ( AESAN ) , it also coordinates its operation. The network consists of researchers from different research agencies (universities and the Higher Council for Scientific Research) and representatives of the Federation of Food and Beverage ( IFLA) and the Foundation Triptólemos .
Any citizen may consult the database and access to nutritional information of any food through a link on the AESAN website ( www.aesan.msps.es ) or directly via e www.bedca.net . Available also the calorie content of food or the source of data collection, data up to 39 food.
Researchers have assembled the references in each of the above tables that were used in Spain and with this information based onfeccionaron c ultimately every food that gives a code that identifies unequivocally. In this way, you avoid that, as before, possible confusion between various products.
Users can, through this network, identify sources of specific nutrients, analyze individual diets, design special diets for patients, providing information to patients , make analysis of data from dietary surveys to assess the impact of diet on health and disease, to design special diets for epidemiological investigations, conduct surveillance of food and nutrient availability, to develop dietary guidelines, provide education and consumer education and preparation educational material (eg for schools), among other utilities.
